Deezer pairs lyrics with Instagram Stories, Google and Pandora in rights row

Deezer has partnered with Instragram Stories to enable users to share song lyrics via the social media platform.

Favourite lyrics from the streaming service’s music catalogue can now be posted on Instagram Stories. Followers can then listen to the entire track on Deezer, direct from the shared Instagram Stories post.

On the Deezer mobile player, users can tap the Lyrics symbol to view lyrics, select and then share with their followers via a redirect to Instagram’s Story mode.

The feature allows fans to share up to five lines of lyrics alongside artwork, artists, playlists, albums and podcasts. It is available for free and premium users on Android and iOS.

Stefan Tweraser, Deezer’s chief product and growth officer, said: “Songs offer us one of the best and most human ways to express ourselves. Thanks to our new integration with Instagram, music fans can now share not only their own special moments, but the song lyrics that tell their personal story in the best way.”

Deezer’s lyrics are provided by fully licensed service LyricFind.

Meanwhile, both Google and Pandora have faced claims over the use of lyrics on their platforms.

Google has denied ‘scraping’ content from Genius Media and has pledged to make clear the third-party provider of any lyrics.

Wixen Music Publishing has filed a lawsuit against Pandora over the use of lyrics. The publisher, whose catalogues include songs by Tom Petty and Weezer, claims that Pandora ““knowingly used lyrics without any valid license or authorisation.”

Like Google and Deezer, Pandora has a partnership with provider LyricFind. However, Wixen stated that the rights do not include its artists.
