Google Play Music crowns Sia must-see act of festival season

As festival season kicks off with Isle Of Wight and Field Day, Google Play Music has looked at its most-streamed artists who are on the circuit this summer.

Australian singer/songwriter Sia triumphs with the No.1 spot as the most streamed artist playing a major UK festival this year, with household names Justin Bieber, Adele and Coldplay taking second, third and fourth place respectively. US duo Twenty One Pilots round out the Top 5, with an appearance at Reading & Leeds Festival later this summer.

The findings are based on music streams from 2016 so far, and review everything from who the most streamed UK festival headliner is, and how festival newbies are faring against the global stars they’re lined up with, to what the most streamed festival line-up is, how many of the most streamed acts are from the UK, and much more.

Nearly three quarters (72%) of the Top 50 most streamed artists playing the UK festival circuit are from the UK, showing that the popularity of home-grown talent remains strong. Nearly one quarter (24%) have never performed to a major UK festival crowd before, including Bieber, who will make his debut to the UK festival scene at V Festival.

V Festival has the most streamed line-up, with 19 acts reaching the Top 50 most streamed, including Sia, Little Mix (No.6), Jess Glynne (No.8) Rihanna (No.9) and Years & Years (No.10).

Rory Woodbridge, streaming lead for Google Play Music in Europe, said: “People travel from all over the country and across the world to check out the music festivals here in the UK, and each year the line-ups give music fans a great flavour of the biggest and best acts around, whether they’re global stars or emerging newcomers.

"It’s been really interesting to put a microscope over the various line-ups and look at what the streaming data tells us about the festival season as a whole, right as it kicks off.”
