Music crowdfunding wasn’t invented by some technological whizzkid at a digital start-up. It was actually dreamed up by Mark Kelly, keyboard player with veteran prog-rockers Marillion.
In 1997, the band raised $60,000 (£38,000) from their online fans to help finance a US tour. Kelly realised the potential of the model and the band have subsequently used it to fund most of their albums since 2001’s Anoraknophobia.
