Coldplay take Ticketmaster's global Ticket Of The Year prize

Ticketmaster customers have crowned Coldplay as the global Ticket Of The Year 2016.

The band, whose A Head Full Of Dreams tour has sold more than 1 million tickets this year, also won the UK’s vote for their Ticket of the Year, with their Wembley Stadium show the No.1 ticket, their Manchester show at Etihad Stadium taking fifth place, and Glasgow gig at Hampden Park taking seventh spot.

“We’re honoured to receive the Ticketmaster Ticket of the Year award," said Coldplay's Chris Martin. "Thank you to everyone who voted for us. The shows that we’ve played this year have been very special to us so it’s wonderful to know that they’ve been special to the fans as well.”

Coming in second place in the UK Ticketmaster customer vote is British rock festival Download (which also took fourth spot globally). Third spot went to Beyoncé and her two sold out Wembley Stadium performances, with  The Stone Roses homecoming performance in the Etihad Stadium in Manchester taking fourth spot.

Creamfields came in at No.6, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band were ninth in the list and Biffy Clyro were at No.10.

With seven out of 10 events in the list taking place in a stadium, 2016 has been a record year for stadium events across all major cities. Ticketmaster’s calculations show a 50% increase in stadium tours on 2015 in the UK.

Ticketmaster MD Andrew Parsons said: “It’s great to see the live event industry in fantastic health with a record year for stadium shows and popularity for outdoor events. This year has seen an unprecedented number of world-class acts taking their huge productions on the road, and fans enjoying these gigs in stadiums and fields far and wide.

“Coldplay taking the title of Ticket of the Year 2016 is equally brilliant news and we are so pleased to see a homegrown act top our poll. We are even more pleased to have delivered thousands of incredible moments of joy to fans across the UK in 2016, and look forward to delivering many more in 2017.”
