Six Questions With... Eksman

Welcome to the latest edition of Six Questions With..., a regular short and sharp interview with a live music figure. Email jhanley@nbmedia.com if you would like to take part or recommend someone for inclusion.

This week's Q&A is with Eksman, one quarter of drum & bass "supergroup" Problem Central, who recently released their debut mixtape. The award-winning MC also runs his own event series, Next Hype.

What was your first job in music?

It was as a drum & bass MC – the role I’m still in now.

How long have you been in your current role?

I got my first break on pirate radio in the mid '90s as an MC and I’ve been promoting events for 11 years.

What is your favourite thing about working in the live music industry?

There are so many different elements to what I do but being on stage and feeling that electric pulse run through the crowd when an absolute belter gets played never gets old. Also, having a whole arena sing along to a lyric that I’ve written is always a buzz.

What is the one thing you would like to change about the live business?

It’s not an issue at every event, but a lot of shows need engineers who fully understand an MC’s needs. Having the levels perfect on stage is vital to a performance, so working together couldn’t be more important.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The birth of Problem Central, which is the new music group I’ve started with Majistrate, Logan D and Evil B, and starting my Next Hype events which provides a platform and training ground for up-and-coming artists to develop and get involved in the scene.

What's the best gig you’ve ever been to?

There are so many that stand out but seeing Public Enemy was absolutely amazing.
