My Chemical Romance, who were nominated for five awards, only won one - best video for Na Na Na.
Def Leppard, who headline the Download Festival tonight, won the Kerrang! Inspiration Award, while fellow Sheffield act Bring Me The Horizon won best album for There Is A Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let's Keep It A Secret, ahead of albums from Avenged Sevenfold, Escape The Fate, My Chemical Romance and The Blackout.
You Me At Six won best British band and Asking Alexandria received best British newcomer. Black Veiled Brides were best international newcomer.
The event, which is sponsored by energy drink Relentless, marked the 30th anniversary of Kerrang! later this year, with video tributes from acts including Iron Maiden and Metallica.
Kicking off the night, the magazine's editor in chief Phil Alexander said Kerrang! had "replaced cynicism with passion".
"Kerrang! is way of life," he added. "Everyone in this room has chosen this way of life"
