According to Official Charts Company data released by the BPI, 23m albums were sold between January 1 and March 31 this year, compared to 27m in Q1 2011.
Better news came in the singles market, which was up 4.4% year-on-year. Q1 2012 sales hit 46.7m, a 2m increase on 2011's 44.7m figure.
Interestingly, digital accounted for almost a third (33.1%) of all UK albums sales this year to-date, up from 23.6% in the first quarter of 2011.
