Bauer Media's Gary Stein is to take charge of the musical output of the group's Place Portfolio of regional radio stations in a new director of music role.
Stein begins in the new job on January 14 in which he will oversee the playlists of the northern English and Scottish radio stations and work with the local station teams. The music set up for Bauer's London stations will remain as before, managed by Kiss FM head of music Christian Smith and his opposite number Sheena Mason at Magic 105.4 respectively, but Stein will work with both of them in what Bauer said would ensure synergy across the group.
He will also work closely with Bauer's cross-platform music & content director Ric Blaxill who will continue to be the entry point for record labels to the media company. Stein in turn will take charge of song order, musical context from presenters, playlists, back catalogues and music features for the Place Portfolio regional stations.
Stein has worked at Bauer Media and its predecessor Emap for 17 years, most recently as Key 103 and Magic 1152 AM station and programme director. In his time he has worked at several leading Place Portfolio stations, including Clyde, Northsound and Hallam and won Arqiva UK Programmer of the Year in 2011, while was at Key 103 when it triumphed as UK Station of the Year in 2008.
Bauer said Stein's replacement at Key 103 would be confirmed shortly.
Bauer Radio managing director Dee Ford said: “This transformational new role has been created to ensure that Bauer continues to punch above its weight with listener loyalty by providing the best quality music and an even better listening experience for our audiences across our Place stations. Gary will be bringing a wealth of consumer and music experience to the job, he is a passionate radio programmer who understands the opportunity in delighting listeners.’’
