BitTorrent to 'monetise torrent ecosystem' with DJ Shadow partnership

BiTorrent and DJ Shadow have announced a partnership that the tech company believes could ‘monetise the entire torrent ecosystem’.

BitTorrent and DJ Shadow, alongside digital marketing company Fame House will launch a ‘BitTorrent Bundle’ containing exclusive content and tracks from DJ Shadow’s Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era (1992-1996).

Importantly, this is the first BitTorrent Bundle to feature a free software offer – for a media player, for example - from one of the company’s advertising partners alongside music content. Every time a user chooses to accept the software offer, the artist will get a share of any revenue earned.

The bundles will go out to 150 million active users a month across BitTorrent and uTorrent with the company calling the business model “a potentially sustainable way for all artists to monetise BitTorrent.”

BitTorrent chief executive officer Eric Klinker said: “We’ve had a lot of success in the last few years putting great content in front of our audiences.

“Our featured content experiments with musicians, filmmakers, game developers and authors have resulted in tens of millions of downloads, not to mention record deals, sold-out movie theaters, world tours and all kinds of ancillary revenue generated for the creators we’ve partnered with.

“But that’s no longer enough. We believe we can make digital distribution even more viable for creators and fans. So, beginning now, we’ll be testing new ways to drive profitability for creators while delivering even more meaningful media experiences for our users.

“Our core business is creating the best torrent products in the world, said Klinker. “While we will always have advertising and offer-free products in market such as BitTorrent Plus, we’ve seen how relevant and meaningful good content offers are to our users, and how supportive the BitTorrent community is of the content creators we work with.

“New business models built on top of the BitTorrent ecosystem are the future of content. This is where fans are. It’s time to bring artists, filmmakers and game developers into that conversation in meaningful ways too.”

The DJ Shadow Bundle is the first of a number of new content experiments the company be testing in-client, on its websites and other media properties in the next few months.
