English Heritage launches Picnic Concerts series

English Heritage launches Picnic Concerts series

The events will also make use of Audley End in Saffron Walden, Essex with the likes of Liza Minnelli, Jools Holland with Sandie Shaw, James Blunt, Katherine Jenkins, George Benson, Gipsy Kings, Scouting For Girls, Sophie Ellis Bextor, The Saturdays, Bjorn Again and the Bootleg Beatles also confirmed on the June 24-July 31 bill.

"Picnic Concert sales are going well, said Joel Smith, executive producer for the concert series. "The market is suffering a little bit across the field, we're being told - Ticketmaster is reporting that sales are slower than usual."

However, Smith said that the Picnic Concert sales are picking up as the events get nearer.

"We have production holds that are released on the day of the shows a lot of the time so we always have a box office for walk up business," he continued. "Of course we're keeping our fingers crossed for the weather, but we open with Tom Jones and for artists like that people come along regardless of the weather. However, it can have a direct impact on the classical shows."

The high end nature of the events also make them popular with corporate clients and punters with a bit more money to spend on VIP packages, such as picnics supplied by Carluccios.

"The luxury packages are selling as well as they did last year and we've revamped the hospitality packages so that rather than being in a marquee, they are actually in Kenwood House this year and we've found that people have embraced that," reported Smith.

With thousands of music lovers descending onto the expansive grounds with picnic blankets and hampers in hand, the English Heritage Picnic Concerts this year mark Kenwood House's 60th anniversary of Picnic Concerts, which will be celebrated at a Summer Prom hosted by Aled Jones and featuring the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, which will climax with a fireworks display.
