Professor Richard Barnett, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ulster, says Sharkey has made an outstanding contribution to society through his "commitment to excellence".
Sharkey, who picked up an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Hertfordshire at the end of 2008, will accept his new honour at a graduation ceremony this summer.
Sir Hugh Orde and Professor Sir Desmond Rea will also receive honours from the University alongside community leader Paddy Doherty and Pat Hume, wife of Nobel Laureate Professor John Hume, in recognition of her service to the community.
At the time of his previous academic award Sharkey said he never managed to make it to university because "I was concentrating on getting on Top of the Pops".
