Lou Reed, guitarist, vocalist and chief songwriter of the Velvet Underground and successful solo star, has died aged 71.
[Update] According to the Associated Press news, Reed's literary agent said he died of a "liver-related ailment".
The artist underwent a liver transplant in May this year.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential bands of the 1960s, Reed performed in the Velvet Underground alongside John Cale, where they collaborated with pop artist Andy Warhol.
