Mars album surpasses 1 million UK sales

The Elektra/Atlantic debut tipped over seven figures earlier this week, joining XL's two Adele albums 21 (3.4 million) and 19 (1.1 million) among the year to date's millionaire sellers, according to the Official Charts Company. The Mars album was number 10 on the weekly chart last Sunday and has kept that position in the latest midweek rankings, selling another 43,000 copies this week up to the end of Thursday.

At this stage last year no albums had sold more than 1 million copies within the calendar year, although by the end of 2010 Polydor act Take That's Progress, Reprise/Warner Bros's Michael Buble release Crazy Love and Interscope/Polydor's Lady Gaga album had all surpassed the seven-figure threshold.

Mars also has two of the year's biggest-selling singles with Grenade ranked sixth for 2011 so far up until the end of last week and The Lazy Song 14th.
