MCPS broadcast commission rates to rise, society predicts 'significant 2012 losses'

PRS for Music

Broadcast commission rates are to increase 1.25% for MCPS UK and Ireland Board members from June 2013, after MCPS is predicted to see significant financial losses in 2012.

MCPS sits under the broader PRS for Music brand, and licenses members' mechanical (reproduction) rights and pays mechanical royalties.

Following a decade of decline in revenues from traditional recorded media streams and the growth of digital music services from downloads to streaming, the Board reviewed the rates and the shared operational costs of running the PRS and MCPS Alliance.

The rates have been raised from 12.5% to 13.75% in an attempt to strengthen PRS for Music’s position and are proportionally equal to those recently applied to the PRS administration fee.

Rates will be raised to ensure membership fees in both territories are aligned.  All commission rates will remain under review. The next full review takes place in October 2013.
