MTV has achieved the biggest social vote Twitter has ever seen after receiving more than 1 billion votes for its end of year music accolade #MTVStars.

The month-long promotion, which has trended internationally throughout the competition, involves fans voting for their favourite artists by tweeting #MTVStars followed by the name of the contender they want to win.
