"For the last 10 years or so many of my musical adventures have been with friends from Bristol and Bath,” he revealed.

“So I'm fully aware of the Bell and its legacy and its contribution to the musicians and audience in the surrounding area."

Other high-profile musicians said to be supporting the cause include Gabrielle Aplin,Glastonbury’s Michael Eavis, Midge Ure, Will Gregory from Goldfrapp and Portishead.

Campaign group spokesman Patrick Cave said that a lot of goodwill has been received and that so far it has raised over £300,000, with a deadline of March 20 to put forward an offer to the sellers.
