The Syco album was released in the States this week on the back of an incredible build for the boy band whose first single What Makes You Beautiful last month became the highest charting entry by a debuting UK act on the Hot 100 since The Verve in 1998 when it entered at 28. It has sold around 338,000 downloads to date in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
One Direction have also been undertaking extensive promotion in the market, including this past Monday performing What Makes You Beautiful on The Today Show on NBC. They are due to appear on another NBC staple, Saturday Night Live, on April 7, while they concluded a 10-date tour supporting Big Time Rush at Radio City Music Hall in New York on March 9.
The album they will have to beat to top the Billboard 200 will be Adele's 21 which fell to number two this week as Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball debuted at the top, but 21 could return for a 24th week at number one as it is estimated to sell another 150,000 to 160,000 copies this week.
Meanwhile, fellow British boy band The Wanted hold at number four on the Hot 100 this week with Glad You Came.
