Taylor Swift’s sixth album Red has achieved the biggest sales week for an album since 2002, selling 1.21 million in the week of its release.
The success of Red makes it the first album by a female country singer to top the chart since 1999, when Shania Twain's Come On Over reached No.1.
Swift’s last record Speak Now opened with just over 1 million sales two years ago, and she is the only woman to have two albums selling a million copies in one week since 1991, when SoundScan began tracking sales from music retailers.
Only 18 albums, counting Red, have sold a million in one week, others include Lady Gaga’s Born This Way last year, Speak Now in 2010 and Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III in 2008.
Swift’s label Big Machine have withheld the record from subscription streaming sites like Spotify and Rdio.
