Universal 'close to settlement' in royalties dispute

Universal Music Group (UMG) is close to settling claims that it cheated artists out of royalties from digital downloads.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the putative class action from acts including Chuck D. of Public Enemy (pictured), Whitesnake, Ron Tyson of The Temptations and a trust acting for Rick James, alleges that record labels should treat downloads as "licenses" rather than "sales”, meaning they would receive around 50% of collected income instead of the current 15%.
