Capital bounces back in Q3 Rajars

Thursday October 25, 2007

GCap’s Capital has regained its position as London’s third biggest radio station, although it remains far behind Emap’s Magic 105.4 and Global Radio’s Heart 106.2.

Capital posted an audience share of 4.7% in the quarter three Rajar figures, up from 4.1% in the previous quarter. Its reach increased from 1,519,000 listeners in Q2 to 1,707,000.

Magic 105.4 posted a static audience share of 6.2%, with reach up from 1,963,000 in the previous quarter to 2,027,000. This put it fractionally ahead of Heart 106.2, whose audience share also remained static at 6.2%, and whose reach increased from 1.810,000 to 1,948,000.

This, according to Heart, was its highest audience reach to date. Global Radio executive director Richard Park says, “These Rajars bear out the fact that Heart is an exceptionally strong brand. We’re delighted to have such a talented mix of people to keep Heart fresh and vibrant.”

Magic’s Neil Fox also overtook Capital’s Johnny Vaughan and Heart's Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott to become the number one commercial radio breakfast show in London, the first time that Magic has enjoyed the position.

Magic’s breakfast show grew its weekly reach to 885,000 listeners, ahead of Capital (880,000) and Heart (810,000).

Kiss 100 FM, which last quarter climbed into third place in London ahead of Capital, saw its share fall slightly to 4.3%.

Nationally, the BBC enjoyed a mixed quarter: Radios One and Two both grew their audience shares, to 10.6% and 15.8% respectively, although both lost listeners. Radio One’s reach fell from 10,873,000 in Q2 to 10,578,000, while Radio Two had 13,013,000 listeners in the quarter, down from 13,117,000.
