Mail On Sunday in Macca coup

09:30 | Tuesday May 6, 2008

The Mail On Sunday agrees deal to give away Paul McCartney’s Memory Almost Full and promises more to come

The Mail On Sunday has concluded an attention-grabbing deal with Paul McCartney to give away the former Beatle’s most recent studio album Memory Almost Full. The album, originally released in June 2007 by Starbucks’ Hear Music label, will come free with the May 18 edition of the paper.

The move represents a spectacular coup for The Mail On Sunday, which has previously given away entire studio albums from artists including Prince, Simply Red and, most recently, UB40, whose new studio set Twentyfourseven was included with yesterday’s (Sunday) edition. Memory Almost Full has sold almost 100,000 copies in the UK to date, according to Official Charts Company figures, peaking at number five in the albums chart.

However, The Mail On Sunday managing director Stephen Miron says that this deal will prove a shot in the arm for the album’s fortunes.

    Double lol.

Sounds great. How do you get a copy of the Mail On Sunday if you live in the states? Do you suppose Borders or Barnes and Noble will carry it?

I already have a copy of this album. It won wide spread critical acclaim on it's release and is a grammy nominated success. The album is already platinum status in world sales and this will be a great boost for Sir Paul's repuatation in England. This is probably his best effort since Band On The Run and deserves to be heard by as many people as possible. The album proves that Sir Paul still has the gift of great songwriting.

McCartney has a tendency to stay back from new phenomena until he can figure out what it REALLY offers and this move is just another example. Whereas the Prince and Radiohead moves were divisive, this seems a 'responsible' use of the giveaway-an album that has already upped his sales and critical ratings, ploughed a whole set of new promotional furrows and can now reach a huge audience. Great album, great move. Great Scott...he's done it again.
