Universal beginning the party for Motown's 50th
11:25 | Tuesday August 26, 2008
Universal is this winter launching a campaign to celebrate next year’s 50th anniversary of Motown.
The major’s celebrations for the half century of the legendary record company will begin with the release of a brand new compilation on December 1 featuring Motown tracks selected by fans online. Universal says it plans to release many different versions of the album across the world, each reflecting the respective market’s favourite Motown hits.
The release of the compilation will lead into the 50th anniversary itself, on January 12 2009, with Universal promising to mark the milestone throughout the whole of 2009 under the banner Motown 50 – Today, Tomorrow, Forever.
Universal predecessor PolyGram bought Motown in 1994 with the record company having previously been sold by founder Berry Gordy in 1988 to MCA for $61m.

Talk about flogging a dead horse, everything ever released on Motown has been re released 100 times....
When your 'dead horse' has such a wealth of great pop music can you blame them?
With royalities comes Motown greats to pass on to their children, their children passing it on to their children and so on. Thank God for Motown and it's legacy. Hip Hip Hooray for Motown. I am one of the children of a motown great, so Nick don't hate. It will go on for generations. Mr. Gordy may be the founder and seller but there is still gold at the end of Motown's rainbow. Why ya hating on Motown, check out Holland Dozier Holland going to Broadway and if your smart, get a ticket to the First Wives Club The Musical. The Holland Dozier and Holland writing team are still Alive and doing what they do best. Yeah Baby! Gotta love them! Go HDH! Peace, Love and Continued Success, LGH 2008
