Feargal Sharkey to be made a Doctor

Chris McIntyre, the Dean of the University’s Faculty for Creative and Cultural Industries, will tell the graduation ceremony that they are honouring an individual whose “voice remains as powerful in the music business now as when we first heard it on record 30 years ago.”

McIntyre says that while Sharkey is perhaps best known as a performing artist, in a wide-ranging career he has also achieved success as a businessman and has acted as a Government advisor.

Sharkey says, “I never made it to University as I was concentrating on getting on Top of the Pops. So this is a great honour.”

“I am specifically pleased to receive a Doctorate from the University of Hertfordshire whose dedication to students and music is reflected in the work and the commitment of its teachers.”

The Music and Entertainment Industry Management Programme at the University conducted the first ever piece of research into the musical consumption habits of 14-24 year olds earlier this year.

In 2009, UK Music will commission a second piece of research to find out the habits of this age group.
