Guardian triumphs at music journalism awards

The Guardian and the Observer won five gongs at last night’s 2008 Record Of The Day Awards for Music Journalism and PR, while Word was named magazine of the year.
Observer Music Monthly’s editor Caspar Llewellyn-Smith picked up editor of the year award for the second year running; The Guardian won best music coverage in a national newspaper and best podcast; Guardian journalist Alexis Petridis was named record reviews writer of the year and the Observer’s Kitty Empire won live reviews writer of the year.
Other winners at the awards, which took place at the Conway Hall in London, included Dog Day Press, who were awarded best independent PR company, and Polydor, who won best in-house PR department.
Jon Savage receiving the outstanding contribution to music journalism award, MBC PR co-founder Barbara Charone won the outstanding contribution to music PR awards and Pennie Smith received the outstanding contribution to music photography award.

Paul Lester is a Guardian writer too, no? How boring. I like the Guardian and OMM's coverage, sure, but such an overwhelming victory in almost every category that matters does a disservice to all the other very good->great music journalism in the UK these days. This is just like Q giving Coldplay a bunch of awards for being Coldplay.
