Napster re-launches in the UK
10:30 | Friday January 30, 2009
Napster has re-launched its subscription service in the UK, with a new web-based model.
Napster Version 4.6 will allow subscribers to access and play their music on any internet-connected computer, without downloading any software.
Services include streaming full-length tracks from the Napster catalogue and full access to existing Napster libraries and playlists.
4.6 also includes a new Automix function - an automated music recommendation and discovery tool that creates custom generated playlists based on the tracks that a member selects from the Napster catalogue – as well as a new mood manager tool, which allows users to create music choices to suit any mood.
To support the launch, Napster’s consumer website has also had a complete overhaul, including, it says, significant improvements to user experience.
Napster vice president of sales and marketing Thorsten Schliesche says, “Napster’s mission has always been to enable consumers to explore and share the world of music as simply as possible. The introduction of Napster 4.6 with its optimised user interface and exciting new features offers music fans endless possibilities to enjoy their favourite music at anytime and wherever they are.”
Napster 4.6 incorporates more than 7m tracks from 540,000 artists and 640,000 albums.

This version is totally useless - can't connect to the service at all since installing it. Can't even go back to the old version, as it forces an upgrade when you try to start it. Emailed customer support - no response at all. Terrible service. Don't these people test the software before releasing it?
Bill, I am having a similar problem. Ever since downloading 4.6 I have been unable to sign in, either via the Napster on my PC or via the napster.co.uk website. I have been on the phone to customer support (the e-mail support is even more useless) several times in the past five days. The first few days they said the problem was that the server was down. Today they said the server was up and running - but I was still unable to sign in. Yet for the past few years I have had no problem with Napster at all. I have uninstalled and reinstalled freshly downloaded 4.6 several times, but all to no avail. In addition, customer support got me to download several extra pieces of software from their support site, but they made no difference. So I think I am going to have to cancel my subscription.
