UK gets open access to Spotify
15:04 | Tuesday February 10, 2009
Spotify has opened its site to all UK users, becoming the first country in the world to have such unrestricted access.
Previously, UK consumers who wanted to use the streaming service had to be invited – although there were many loopholes to be found.
As of today, UK internet users can register for free directly at spotify.com. The basic streaming service is ad-supported but there is also a premium, ad-free service available. More features will be added to this in the coming months.
“Our user base has grown very quickly in the UK, which is a prioritised market for us. We feel now's the right time to spread our wings while still remaining in beta for the immediate future as we carefully track our growth,” a spokesman says.
“We've been bowled over by the interest that Spotify has received in the UK in the short time since our launch, and as a result we feel now is a good time to open up the free service to everyone in the Kingdom, without the need of a Spotify invite. This will be the first country that Spotify will give users' unrestricted access.”

Good news for you! With Spotify installed, a good idea is to go to Mixifier - a Facebook app - where you can share good "mixtapes" (= Spotify playlists) with your friends. Why not send a romantic mixtape to that special someone on Valentine's Day? http://www.mixifier.com http://apps.facebook.com/mixifier
Excellent service!!! If you havent already tried it out - do so now!
I've just joined, I'm streaming the brand new Lily Allen album (jolly good it is too). What benefit is this to Lily or her co-writer Greg Kirsten? Will they earn money from this, or is this just another case of the copyright owners getting paid for something and not passing it on to the artists/writers. Are they hoping I'm going to buy the CD/mp3s?
