Omnifone targets broadband providers with new service
11:12 | Monday February 16, 2009
Omnifone has launched a new version of its MusicStation product at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with the aim of combating P2P piracy.
MusicStation Next Generation enables broadband providers to easily introduce legal unlimited music services. Its music services are expected to be bundled with monthly subscriber plans, as well as being offered to existing subscribers on a Pay As You Go basis.
Omnifone already has international licensing agreements in place for unlimited music downloads or streaming with all four major music labels and thousands of independents.
However, reports that it is talking to Sky about the new service are unfounded. Omnifone does work as a back end partner on Sky's joint venture music subscription service with Universal.
What is more, the company has confirmed its is talking to Sky about the new service, although it says reports that it is on the verge of signing a deal are unfounded.
Omnifone CEO Rob Lewis says his company offers a service “better than piracy”. “Tens of millions of European consumers are engaged in music piracy every day. Whilst government pressure is growing, we also need to deliver alternatives that recognise the needs and desires of the YouTube generation.
“With today’s announcement, Omnifone is offering consumers something better than piracy. MusicStation Next Generation gives consumers legitimate unlimited access to the world’s music, in audio and video format, direct to their living room, through set-top box or personal computer, in partnership with their ISP or cable company. Broadband providers can deliver a better music experience; a legal alternative to piracy that differentiates their consumer proposition”.

i like this idea, however if its just for sky then thats a total turn off already for me, and probably a lot of other people in the uk, though sky is good, it isnt 100%coverage over the uk, and ignoring that it isnt cheap!
