Birth of Greenpeace captured on album
Friday September 18, 2009
The concert that sparked the launch of Greenpeace is to be released on CD for the first time.
Featuring Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and the late Phil Ochs, Amchitka is to be released on November 10 exclusively by Greenpeace with all proceeds benefiting the organisation.
The live recording captures a fundraising concert at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia on October 16 1970, in protest of US nuclear bomb tests near Amchitka. The show raised enough money to send 11 peace activists by boat, christened The Greenpeace, to the Aleutian Island of Amchitka, leading to the foundation of the charitable organisation.
“We are pleased to offer this musical slice of history to Greenpeace supporters and music lovers around the world,” says Bruce Cox, Greenpeace Canada’s executive director. “This CD is a piece of musical magic. It contains never before heard songs, duets and chatter that capture the confidence and hope of the times. It carries a timeless message that change is possible.”
