Classic Rock honours classic rockers
Tuesday November 3, 2009
Iggy Pop joined a host of other major stars at London’s Park Lane Hotel last night as the annual Marshall Classic Rock Roll Of Honour paid tribute to the great and the good of the genre.
Hosted by Thunder frontman Danny Bowes, the awards honoured a number of veteran artists, with Iggy taking home the biggest prize of the night with his new status as Living Legend.
Recognising his musical achievements with the Jeff Beck Group, The Faces and now The Rolling Stones, Ronnie Wood was presented with the Outstanding Contribution award by fellow guitar legend Pete Townshend, while former Cream drummer Ginger Baker was honoured as the Classic Rock magazine Innovator for his pioneering rhythm techniques and indelible influence.
The Tommy Vance Inspiration Award went to the late John Bonham – with the Led Zeppelin drummer’s mother and sister collecting the award in his honour.
AC/DC picked up the album of the year award, while Iron Maiden were named Band Of The Year and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi was on hand to collect the Best Reissue award.
Meanwhile, the award for Best New Band went to a group of musicians better known for their services with some of the biggest stadium rock acts in the world – Chickenfoot, which is comprised of Van Halen’s Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani.
And in the live category, Live Nation VP of Promotions Andy Copping hit the stage to pick up Event Of The Year for the Download Festival.
