Presley hit writer dies
16:04 | Friday December 4, 2009
Songwriter Aaron Schroeder, who wrote a string of hits for Elvis Presley including It’s Now Or Never, has died in New Jersey aged 83.
Alongside It’s Now Or Never, which remains Presley’s biggest-selling single in the UK, Schroeder also penned songs including Stuck On You, Good Luck Charm, A Big Hunk O’ Love and I Got Stung that were recorded by the King.
Other highlights of his long career include the Bobby Vee hit Rubber Ball, which he penned with Gene Pitney, and Duane Eddy smash Because They’re Young, which he wrote with Wally Gold and Don Costa. He also had songs recorded by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Carl Perkins and Barry White, while Young And Beautiful, which he wrote with Abner Silver and which Presley performed in the movie Jailhouse Rock, was recently covered by Richard Hawley.
Minder Music’s John Fogarty, whose company publishes his songs in the UK, says, “Aaron was a quiet man but his songs speak for themselves.”
A service for Schroeder, who is survived by wife Abby and a daughter, will be held this coming Monday at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan.
