Retailers massively discount X Factor single
11:22 | Monday December 14, 2009
An online price war has broken out over the X Factor single, with Tesco and Amazon both selling the single, Joe McElderry’s version of The Climb, as a download for £0.29.
Play is currently offering the single, which is a near certainty for the Christmas number one, for £0.65 while HMV has it available for £0.79.
Market leader iTunes, however, is selling it for £0.99. The single is currently unavailable for streaming Spotify, with Syco clearly hoping for massive week-one sales.
It is, however, available for streaming on we7 and can be purchased there for £1.07.
Tesco is extending its discounting strategy to the top 10 albums, selling them as download bundles at £3.97 each this week.
This echoes Amazon MP3’s heavy discounting strategy this time last year as a means of raising profile and getting traction in a market heavily dominated by Apple.
With more than 19m viewers and 10m votes for the X Factor final last night, it is expected that McElderry’s single will at least match the 580,000 sold by former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke last year.

Right... So, Alexander Burke & JLS won 1st & 2nd place respectively last year. Both have had success on a neck n neck basis since [more or less] They topped it all with a duet last night (or collaboration or super turn.... whatever you want to call it) in front of the UK millions. So we know 10 million punters are happy to splash money on a voting system that is pointless at best.. but we assume they won't spend the same amount of money on said product they voted for. I don't get it. I'll get my coat.
Hello. I thought all download sales less than 50p are ineligible for the chart. Is this still true?
