6 Music drops Dickinson
17:17 | Wednesday March 10, 2010
Bruce Dickinson’s 6 Music show is to be axed, while Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie's Radio 2 show is going down to three nights a week.
Iron Maiden singer Dickinson has presented a show for 6 Music since its launch in 2002.
The show goes out on Fridays from 9pm to midnight on Friday nights and aims to takes the listener on “a guitartastic journey”. It will reportedly finish at the end of April.
Meanwhile, Radcliffe and Maconie's weeknight show is being cut from four to three days a week to make way for a new live concert show on Thursdays. Radio 2 In Concert launches on Thursday April 15.
A 6 Music spokeswoman says, “6 Music is currently reviewing the way it reflects the Rock/Heavy Metal genres across the network and has decided to decommission the Friday Night Rock Show. The network, however, remains committed to reflecting both genres throughout the schedule as part of its core music offering. We would very much like to thank Bruce Dickinson for the hard work and commitment he has shown to 6 Music over the past eight years.”

And so the first steps towards the complete neutering of intelligent music radio are taken. Radcliffe & Maconie's show is immensely popular and has won awards. But it's probably not delivering enough 'unique listeners' to the soul-less bean counters currently running the BBC (into the ground).
Excellent, maybe they can replace it with a show covering the underlooked genre that is American "r'n'b" music. God knows, we don't hear enough Rihanna, Chris Brown etc etc on the radio, what with all the airspace being taken up with rock and metal shows...
lol black ^^
It's about time they shook the rock show tree... It needs a 'Rock' show that broadens it's brush and takes off the blinkers... Define 'Rock'... From Elvis56', through Stones 66, Pistols 76, Guns & Roses 86' Korn 96', Slipknot 06' & all the new roc n the new decade... The Best Of The Past, present & future... All in one show... i'd love to produce/present a show like that... Jx
