LG Arena work gets under way
16:16 | Monday December 8, 2008
Advantage West Midlands (AWM) yesterday granted the final £3m of a multimillion pound budget to Birmingham’s LG Arena, allowing building work to get under way.
Regional development agency AWM granted £3m to the arena, which they believe will generate money for the regional economy.
AWM head of tourism and culture, Roger Allonby says “The enhanced LG Arena will boost Birmingham’s competitiveness as a global city.”
Birmingham City Council loaned the initial £25m for refurbishment plans, which include new bars, restaurants, backstage areas and 2000 extra seats.
The arena, formerly known as NEC, has had millions of visitors since opening 28 years ago. Allonby says, “The NEC Group has attracted major entertainment events, exhibitions and conferences generating millions of pounds for the regional economy and attracting thousands of visitors.”
Building work has now started on a 28 metre tower, a new feature for the arena.
