UK could be set for digital radio switch in 2017
11:41 | Friday December 19, 2008
Radiocentre, the industry body for commercial radio, today welcomed a report from the Digital Radio Working Group (DRWG) that suggested British radio could be ready to migrate from analogue to digital as early as 2017.
For this to happen, at least half of radio being listened to must be digital, national coverage must be comparable to FM and local coverage should reach at least 90% of the population, including all major roads, the report says.
The DRWG is also lobbying the Government to relax legislative and regulatory burdens on the industry, encourage motorists to use digital radio in their cars and make digital radios duty-free to decrease costs and increase sales.
DRWG chairman Barry Cox says, “With nearly a million DAB sets expected to be sold this Christmas period we know listeners are already benefiting from the choice of channels available at the moment. We have always believed in the future of digital radio and now urge the industry, along with Government and Ofcom to address the barriers to successful migration.”

There may be a large choice of channels for DAB in the UK, but the sound quality is awful. There needs to be a greater effort to implement DAB+ more strongly.
Nearly all car radios, HI-FIs , and home radios will be rendered useless AND FOR WHAT? G.B. and its many OAP's are already out of pocket because of the digital TV con. Is this another money making scheme for the experts and the government? IT'S NOT BROKE DON'T FIX IT! Leave us alone!
AM radio is broke which is why DAB is a joy in that sense at least! The sound quality is ok but can and must be improved.
Tried two DABs. One could just about pick up Classic FM (poor quality) when placed on the bedroom windowledge, the other could tune only a few BBC channels. Useless in this location, but the dishonest advertising continues, promising dazzling sound quality (from a 3-inch loudspeaker!). At the very least, keep FM until we have comparable coverage of DAB. At least when FM was launched we did not lose MW.
