Midem organisers boast of new attendees

12:33 | Wednesday January 27, 2010

7,200 people participated in this year’s Midem, representing 3,200 companies from 78 countries. This is a fall of 13% on 2009 but organisers say that of the 3,200 companies represented, 28% attended for the first time, with the majority operating in the digital sector.

Midem director Dominique Leguern also points to the success of new initiatives such as Midem+. “We have introduced a lot of new ideas this year and the response has been very positive,” she says.

“We launched Midem+ which offers business consulting, contact recommendations and targeted networking opportunities and, of course, we have expanded MidemNet to run throughout Midem and made it available to all delegates at no extra cost.

“For managers we have opened the Midem Managers’ Village, hosted by the International Music Managers’ Forum, which will bring managers together and includes conferences dedicated to their activity.

“And we have brought 15 start-up companies who are at the cutting-edge of digital initiatives to present themselves at the new MidemNet Lab and the MidemNet Academy, which is an educational platform for discussion about developments in digital, has proved very popular,” added Leguern.

South Africa was the country of honour at Midem 2010, with attendees from 30 of the country’s companies and 50 artists, headed by Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Lulu Xingwana and Department of Arts and Culture Director General Themba Wakashe.

Midem is great but Cannes is overpriced and has lost it. This puts off too many younger executives. The Palais and restaurants are now full of "older" geezers and gals who have been going for 20+ years out of habit. In the 90s and early 2000s it was a real mixture including young turks spending big at night and waking up late, but still causing ripples with their ideas and products. Flights to Nice are only 60 quid…Midem hotels are not too bad at 80 -150 quid a night depending. Registration has always been steep but is now balanced out with the cheaper flights. So it's the 8 euros for a beer (which more than 80% of the CDs in a FNAC) and the 22 euros for a poxy bog standard pizza that must put people off This makes Cannes the missing link. As long as Midem and Cannes are married I think the participant numbers will drop double digits every year. Many former participants once lobbied for a move to Barcelona 10 years ago. The GSM conference that once followed the Midem week dumped Cannes ages ago for Barcelona. The music business needs a new place in the sun. ZZZzzzz to Cannes

Actually, most MIDEM hangouts in Cannes (Carlton, Martinez etc) charge 9 euros - not "only 8" - for a beer. Otherwise, I actually agree with most of Ricky Lopez thoughts and comments.
