Industry calls for TOTP return backed by poll
11:34 | Friday November 28, 2008
Musicweek.com readers have given their overwhelming backing for the BBC to bring back Top Of The Pops as a weekly programme.
A poll running on the site over the past week found 91% of respondents said TOTP should return with only 9% rejecting the idea.
The huge support for the return of the iconic music programme, which was axed as a weekly programme in July 2006 after more than 42 years, follows a rethink by the Beeb last week over having a Christmas Day edition of the show.
The BBC had said several weeks back that it would not be broadcasting an episode of the programme on December 25 this year, but has since had a change of heart, with an announcement last week of not only a Christmas Day special but one on New Year’s Eve as well. Both shows will be hosted by Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates, the presenters of Radio One’s Sunday chart show.
Although the BBC says having these shows does not indicate a return of the programme on a weekly basis, industry insiders are optimistic TOTP will be coming back in the near future.
