Music Week Presents: The Gift

Forward-thinking alternative-pop quartet The Gift are back with their highly-anticipated new single ‘Love Without Violins’ featuring Brian Eno, who also co-wrote and produced the track, set for release via their own label La Folie Records on 30th September.

The first offering from their upcoming new album - featuring the Grammy-nominated music maverick on several tracks composed and produced over two years with the band’s keyboardist Nuno Gonçalves and mixed by legendary mixing engineer Flood - sees the Portuguese band sharing vocal duties and instruments with Eno, who also wrote the lyrics with singer Sonia Tavares. The new cut is a telling demonstration of both The Gift’s range of influences and their command of their medium.

“We were not thinking about the roles of each one in the band. Sometimes we exchanged instruments, and some of them tried an instrument for the first time. I played in several songs. It was interesting to me, ‘cause I had ideas that I couldn’t use at my job because I wasn’t working on such subjects”, explains Brian Eno.

Following up on the success of their internationally acclaimed latest album Explode’ produced by Coldplay and Paolo Nutini collaborator Ken Nelson- which debuted at #1 on the nation’s charts and holed up in the Top 10 for more than 10 weeks achieving gold status - the band is Portugal’s biggest musical export. In Europe, they shared the stage with the likes of Arcade Fire and Portishead, performed at SXSW, went on to win an MTV Europe award for best Portuguese act, and toured USA and Canada supporting Anna Calvi.
