KEY TRACK: NEO
LABEL: Heavenly Recordings
WHO: Chai are identical twins Mana and Kana – who both sing, and play guitar and keyboard respectively – plus bassist Yuki and drummer Yuna.
WHAT: Pop as heard through a tumble dryer – there are notes of ESG and Tom Tom Club, but this day-glo mania takes the mickey out of categorisation.
WHERE: Chai moved to Tokyo from their hometown of Nagoya, where they formed at school.
CAN I HEAR THEM?
Mini-album Pink is due on Heavenly on October 12, with extra tracks available on DSPs already. It’s brilliant chaos: sweet pop melodies smeared with noise, disco riffing and Alan Partridge-friendly basslines.
WHAT’S THE STORY?
The four-piece are all about empowerment, embracing imperfection and being anything other than boring.
Rightly so, Chai are a shot of real energy. See them support Superorganism next month.
