Making Waves: Jamila Woods

Making Waves: Jamila Woods

Each week, Music Week profiles a red hot brand new artist. This week, new Jagjaguwar signing Jamila Woods is under the microscope...

Key Track: LSD (feat. Chance The Rapper)
Label: Jagjaguwar
Twitter: @duhmilo
Management: Sharod Smith

WHO? Singer and poet. Attracted the ears of Jagjaguwar, who are reissuing debut solo album Heavn this month.

WHAT? Ultra-modern protest music. Woods uses soul, R&B and pop as playthings, crafting a lysergic background for her vocals.

WHERE? Chicago, also home to collaborator Chance The Rapper. It’s a fertile stomping ground for Woods.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE CHICAGO CONNECTION...

As well as Chance, Heavn features Windy City musos Nico Segal, Noname, Saba, Peter Cottondale, OddCouple and Kweku Collins. Spread over 20 tracks, their work makes for a tricksy listen.

TWENTY TRACKS? STEADY ON!

Calm down. The shapeshifting nature of the sound and the urgent likes of Blk Girl Soldier and Breadcrumbs mean the record grips from start to finish.

Also, Incubus fans check out track 16…

SO, WILL SHE BECOME A STAR?

Woods already is. Jagjaguwar will be hoping the sheer soul on display here can propel her skyward.
