HMV sets the vinyl record straight

Sainsbury's has gained a great deal of positive publicity in the last 24 hours, with a raft of stories reporting it to be 'the biggest vinyl retailer on the high street', following claims made in its Q1 trading statement. Only it isn't. Not in terms of market share, anyway. And that market share, of eight per cent, was reported right next to that 'biggest retailer' claim. Which confused a confusing situation. Pushed it towards baffling, in fact, because, surely, at some point, most people would look at the words 'eight per cent market share' and the words 'biggest retailer' and think something along the lines of 'how the hell can you be the biggest retailer of vinyl with a market share of just eight per cent?'. This year’s awards landed in the middle of Kerrang!’s 35th birthday celebrations, so it’s fitting that three generations of rockers were honoured. Fresh from headlining Wembley Arena just days ago, Deftones had their incredible career recognised with the Kerrang!Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Planet Rock. Deftones shot to international fame in the late-’90s and their sound has evolved consistently over the past 20 years. blink-182 delighted fans by picking up the Icon Award in person – Mark Hoppus and new member Matt Skiba were in attendance to receive the honour. Asking Alexandria were victorious in taking home Best British Band, presented by WWE 2K17. The Yorkshire metallers stunned the world this year with their first album with new vocalist Denis Stoff and impressive live performances. They beat off stiff competition from Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari, Iron Maiden and Biffy Clyro.

British female artists are spot on for sync

Underlining the continuing success of British artists and labels, much of the great music behind some of 2015’s most memorable TV and online ads came from home-grown talent.  Music recordings or ‘syncs’ from British acts accounted for the best part of half (41.2 per cent) of the tracks used by brands and their advertising and media agencies to promote their products and services to the general public, reveals independent research by adbreakanthems published today by the UK record labels’ association, the BPI, and the MPA – the Music Publishers’ Association. Leading the way were a string of British female artists, with material by Paloma Faith proving particularly popular as no fewer than four major brands (Calvin Klein, Dixons, Simply Be, and Eastern Western) turned to the BRIT Award-winning singer for their TV adverts.  Paloma also claimed the title of “most-synced” song of 2015 with a track she co-wrote, Ready for the Good Life – a distinction she shared with the Motown classic, Sunny, which was also widely used last year. The survey, which monitored nearly 800 TV and online ads first aired in the UK during 2015, is the most comprehensive snapshot of the sync market available to industry.  Synchronisation or ‘sync’ is the industry term used for the placement of music into audio-visual content such as advertisements, trailers, video games, films and TV programmes.

Alan Parker’s Bugsy Malone Returns to the Lyric Hammersmith

Bugsy Malone, the smash hit musical created by Sir Alan Parker, is returning to the Lyric Hammersmith, London from June 11 to September 4, 2016. The show contains songs from Oscar-winning writer Paul Williams, published by Warner/Chappell Music, the global music publishing arm of Warner Music Group.  The classic tracks include Bad Guys, My Name Is Tallulah, So You Wanna Be A Boxer and You Give A Little Love. This Olivier Award nominated (Best Revival of a Musical, 2016) production directed by the Lyric’s Artistic Director, Sean Holmes, had a sell-out run at the Lyric Hammersmith last year and is now set to run for further 12 weeks over the summer.  Bugsy Malone is set in Prohibition-era America and is a story of mobsters, showgirls and dreamers, but with children and young adults portraying all of the characters. At the Lyric Hammersmith the production is led by three teams of young stars performing in rotation, with an ensemble of fresh talent aged 16 and older.  The show was originally created as a musical film in 1976, directed by Parker and starring Jodie Foster and Scott Baio.
