Making Waves: Ida Mae

Ida thought so: Ida Mae

This week's hottest brand new act...

Ida Mae

KEY TRACK: Boom Boom Boom
LABEL: Vow Road Records/Thirty Tigers
MANAGEMENT: Vector Management
FACEBOOK: @idamaemusic

WHO: Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean are the husband and wife duo behind Ida Mae, a hard rocking new band that formed from the ashes of grungy noughties group Kill It Kid.

WHAT: The blues, baby. Turpin has pared back the noise and named Ida Mae after the song by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. It was the first one he and Jean ever sang harmonies to.

WHERE: Turpin is from Norwich, but Ida Mae have set up camp in Nashville, Tennessee, which makes sense.

I REMEMBER KILL IT KID!

As well you might, they were covered heavily in the music press. This is a classic case of two musicians leaving the band that made their name and reverting to their roots.

FAIR ENOUGH…

With references spanning Robert Johnson, Ella Fitzgerald and Bo Diddley, Ida Mae’s debut, Chasing Lights, is a delight. Production from Ethan Johns adds extra heft.

ARE THEY TOURING?

You bet. A run of UK dates continues on July 11 at the Kings Head in London.
