Should you ever be in close proximity to the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Ivor Novello Award, chances are you’ll hear him before you see him.

As soon as Music Week enters the premises of Nitin Sawhney’s Brixton studio, a shrieking guitar solo comes flooding down the corridor towards us.

Sawhney’s studio is, in fact, more accurately a music sanctuary – at its heart a colossal recording console, orbited by instruments, books and awards.
