Foo Fighters kick off Radio 1's Live Lounge Month

Foo Fighters have launched Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month with a performance from LA. Ahead of the release of their Concrete & Gold album via Columbia, Dave Grohl and the band kicked of the network’s special series of live sessions with Clara Amfo throughout September.

Foo Fighters, who recently spoke to Music Week about their comeback, played new single The Sky Is A Neighborhood, Best Of You and a cover of AC/DC’s Let There Be Rock.

Live Lounge Month continues next week with performances from Coldplay’s Chris Martin live from Malibu, The Script, The xx, Thirty Seconds To Mars and Pink. Other confirmed acts for September include The Killers, London Grammar, Harry Styles, Rita Ora, Wolf Alice, George Ezra, Rag’N’Bone Man and Lorde.

The regular Live Lounge slot during the 10am-1pm show has become a Radio 1 institution – 1Xtra also has its own Live Lounge – with artists playing unexpected covers alongside a song of their own. As this year’s Live Lounge Month also coincides with the network’s 50th anniversary events, participating acts will play a cover version of a hit from any time in the past five decades.

“Live Lounge Month is forming part of the 50th celebration and we’ve got a very strong line-up,” Rhys Hughes told Music Week prior to moving from his head of programmes role at Radio 1 to head of live music & events, popular music. “It’s a combination of big UK acts and big US acts. There will be a Live Lounge every day Monday to Friday, we’ve got some exciting stuff to kick it off with and some exciting stuff to finish it.”

Each Friday edition will be a Live Lounge Special with extended performances from Foo Fighters, Pink, Miley Cyrus and Jay-Z. For the final day of Live Lounge Month on September 29, Radio 1 will broadcast an evening concert in front of a live studio audience featuring a special guest.

Videos from Live Lounge month will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
