Matt Edmondson and Mollie King move to Radio 1 weekend Breakfast

Radio 1’s Breakfast Show had a strong quarter in the latest RAJAR results. Greg James can take a lot of the credit for the ratings of 5.75m, up 465,000 year-on-year, but Dev Griffin and Alice Levine also played their part with Friday’s show.

The network is now shaking up its recent innovation with a long weekend (Friday to Sunday) schedule by swapping the duo with afternoon presenters Matt Edmondson and Mollie King.

King, formerly of The Saturdays, was a guest host on Radio 1 who paired up permanently with Edmondson in June for the 1-4pm slot on Monday to Friday. They will now present the weekend Breakfast Show (6-10am) on Friday to Sunday.

Dev and Alice will be in the afternoon slot following Maya Jama’s Greatest Hits (10am-1pm). Both shows launch in November.

Ben Cooper, controller, BBC Radio 1, said: “Radio 1 loves discovering new talent for the BBC and the industry, and Matt and Mollie along with Dev and Alice have been hugely popular with our listeners, on radio, on video and on social.”

Edmondson said: “Getting to present the Radio 1 Breakfast Show three days a week is an absolute dream come true, as is working with Mollie (a nightmare is technically still a dream). I know we’re going to have so much fun, and I can’t wait to get started.”

King added: “I’m absolutely blown away to have been asked to host the Radio 1 Breakfast Show every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Matt Edmondson, my partner in crime! I remember the buzz I got when I first walked into Radio 1 as a guest 10 years ago, and that buzz is still with me now every time I step through the studio doors. I can’t wait to get started!”
