Android most popular OS for new smartphone purchases in US

The Nielsen Company found that 32% of new smartphones bought in the past six months were running Android. BlackBerry and Apple's iOS were tied in second place according to the report.

Overall, BlackBerry dominates with a 31% market share. Apple's iPhone is second with 28% and Android is third with 19%.

This comes as Google CEO Eric Schmidt tells Newsweek that Android is already profitable and that increased ad revenues have covered its development costs.
