Spotify names David Guetta and Rihanna as most streamed artists of 2012


Spotify has today revealed the most streamed songs, albums and artists on its service this year - with David Guetta and Rihanna being the most streamed male and female artists respectively.

Guetta beat Flo Rida and Eminem as the most-streamed male artist of 2012, while Nicki Minaj and Adele came second and third to Rihanna respectively.

Coldplay won the accolade of being the most-streamed band ahead of Maroon 5 and Fun.

This year’s biggest track was Gotye’s hit Somebody That I Used To Know, which was streamed more than any other track in the UK and worldwide, Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe was second place.

Somebody That I Used to Know was also the most-shared song by Spotify users globally, being shared across social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as well as to user’s Spotify Inboxes.

The biggest album of 2012 on Spotify was from David Guetta whose Nothing But the Beat was the most-streamed album of 2012. This was followed by Gotye’s Making Mirrors and Drake’s Take Care, which take the second and third slots respectively.

Spotify’s most-used app of 2012 goes to Tunewiki, the lyrics app. The music chatroom app Soundrop was in second place, and in third place was We Are Hunted, which surfaces the tracks causing the most buzz across the internet.

Away from the top artist and track rankings, 2012 also saw folk-rockers Mumford and Sons capture the Spotify record for the most streams of a newly-released album in 2012, Babel was streamed over 8 million times in just one week in the US. In addition, One Direction smashed the 100m streams milestone this year.
