The chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records' role was announced yesterday at the same time as the new judging line-up for the programme was confirmed, with Randy Jackson, who has been on the show since day one, to be joined by Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

Iovine's arrival on the programme follows a deal announced in August between Universal and 19 Entertainment founder and American Idol creator Simon Fuller for Interscope, Geffen and A&M to market, promote and distribute albums from the show's finalists globally through a range of retail and new media platforms. American Idol was previously affiliated to Sony, which had been the show's recorded music partner for its first nine years.

The forthcoming 10th season of Idol will debut on Fox in the US on January 12 next year and will be the first without Simon Cowell, who in 2011 will be launching his hugely-successful The X Factor franchise in the States.
