Kobalt has signed a worldwide publishing administration deal with Dave Grohl to represent his entire catalogue, including songs with Nirvana and Foo Fighters.
The tie-up, which will mark Grohl leaving his current songwriting home of Universal Music Publishing, begins initially with Kobalt handling worldwide creative and sync services for his new works, including songs from a new documentary directed by him called Sound City - Real To Reel. Kobalt will start handling his prestigious back catalogue in 2014.
The documentary, about the now defunct LA Sound City recording studio where the likes of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty all recorded, as was Nirvana's Nevermind, will premiere at Sundance this week, then Hollywood and will roll out globally later this month.
An accompanying album released in March is being previewed by the single Cut Me Some Slack by Paul McCartney, Grohl and his former Nirvana colleagues Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. The album also includes acts such as Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, Rage Against The Machine's Brad Wilk, Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen and Queens of The Stone Age's Josh Homme who was part of Them Crooked Vultures with Grohl. Also on the album are Grohl's Foo Fighters bandmates Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear.
The switchover in 2014 of Grohl's back catalogue from Universal to Kobalt will give the publisher acess to one of the greatest song catalogues of the last quarter of a century, including his shares of hits by Nirvana and Foo Fighters.
Kobalt founder and CEO Willard Ahdritz said: "It’s a privilege and thrill for all of us to be working with Dave Grohl, John Silva and his management team. As a rock musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and film director, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, Dave is a force and an immense and diverse talent with a catalogue of amazing songs. We look forward to a long relationship and the new Sound City – Real to Reel album due next month.”
Kobalt creative SVP Bob Bortnick added: “Dave is one of the most amazing musicians and songwriters on the planet and we’re honoured that he’s joined us at Kobalt.”
