Ahead of the 60th anniversary of the Official Singles Chart, the Official Charts Company has revealed the Official Top 10 biggest-selling female singles artists of all time.
Since her single chart debut in January 1984, which saw the track Holiday go to No.6, Madonna has gone on to be the biggest-selling female singles artist with combined UK singles sales totalling 17.8 million. In 1985 she scored her first Official Singles Chart No.1 with Into the Groove, which is her biggest-ever selling track and to date, as a lead artist, Madonna has achieved 59 Top 10 hits - including 13 No.1s.
Rihanna places at No.2 in the chart but could topple Madonna from the summit in the near future as she currently has a combined singles sales tally (as a lead artist) of 11.4 million. The 24-year-old Bajan superstar has sold 3 million singles in the last twelve months alone, and if she continues selling singles at this rate, could overtake Madonna in the next two and a half years.
Adding in Rihanna’s collaborative tracks, her total single sales figure reaches 15.1 million.
At No.3 is Kylie Minogue who celebrates 25 years in music in 2012. Her combined singles sales total 10.2 million. To date, she has scored 35 Top 10 hits (including seven No.1s). Her biggest-selling track is Can’t Get You Out Of My Head.
