Singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin, who recently signed to Parlophone, has landed a prestigious sync deal for the John Lewis Christmas television advertisement that will air later today (November 9).
The chosen track, The Power Of Love, is a tender reworking of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood chart-topping original. Aplin has released it to coincide with its television premiere today.
The track’s music video debuted online this morning (find embedded video below) and its television debut will be at 9.10pm tonight during Derren Brown’s programme on Channel 4.
Asked to record the song by John Lewis, Aplin said: “The lyrics are so strong and powerful but the song is so intricate and beautiful, I was fascinated with the juxtaposition of it. What I really wanted to do was strip the production away but keep the energy of the song. And I wanted it to be minimal and wintry.”
Originally recorded for John Lewis during a session with David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything), the single version was subsequently co-produced by Aplin’s current album producer and collaborator Mike Spencer (Emeli Sande, Alex Clare). By coincidence, the single is likely to make its chart impact almost 28 years to the day after the song’s original release on November 19, 1984.
With over 13 million YouTube views on videos made for her previous three EPs already, including over 2.5 million on her track Home, Aplin’s debut album is scheduled for release in Spring 2013, to be preceded by single Please Don’t Say You Love Me on February 10.
